In This Article
Is Raymond Weil a good watch brand? It's the right question to ask about any brand that isn't a household name, and Raymond Weil gets asked it a lot. Our answer is yes, with a clear idea of what you're paying for. You get Swiss watchmaking from a family business, design that doesn't look like everyone else's, and a range that runs from a diamond-set Toccata to the open-worked, in-house Freelancer Calibre RW1212. Here's how we reached that verdict.

Shop Raymond Weil →Who Owns Raymond Weil?
The family that founded it. Raymond Weil started the company in Geneva in 1976, at fifty, after more than twenty years in the watch industry. His son-in-law, Olivier Bernheim, joined in 1982, and today the business is run by his grandson, Elie Bernheim. That's three generations of the same family, with no larger group above them.
Why does that matter to a buyer? Independence shows in the watches. Raymond Weil has never had to fit a group's price ladder, so it has followed its own interests: music, which gave the Toccata its name and inspired limited editions for The Beatles and David Bowie, and design, which gave us the 2007 Freelancer and the integrated-bracelet A.R.T. The founder's aim, a distinctive balance of design, quality and price, is still how the brand describes itself, and it's a fair summary of what you get.
Where Are Raymond Weil Watches Made?
In Switzerland. Raymond Weil is a Geneva brand, its watches are Swiss made, and the company assembles them at its own workshop in Grand-Lancy. This isn't a fashion label with a Swiss address. It's a working Geneva watchmaker that has been there since it began.
Is Raymond Weil a Luxury Brand?
It's accessible luxury, and proud of it. The Raymond Weil watches we carry run from $1,995 RRP for a Toccata Classic to $6,995 for a limited-edition Millesime chronograph. That puts it a clear step above fashion watches, with genuine Swiss watchmaking and finishing for the money, without the price tags that come with the most famous names.
We think that's the sweet spot. The finishing and design detail you get at $3,000 to $4,000 is where Raymond Weil makes its strongest case, and it's a price that more people can justify for a watch they'll wear every day.
Movements and Quality
The range covers Swiss quartz, automatic and, at the top, an in-house calibre. Most of the Toccata models we carry use quartz, which suits a slim dress watch you can pick up and wear without winding. Most of the automatics we carry, such as the A.R.T. with its RW4200, use mechanical self-winding movements with a 41-hour power reserve.
The headline is the Calibre RW1212, Raymond Weil's first in-house movement. In the Freelancer RW1212 the dial is open-worked to show the balance at six o'clock, held by a single bridge, and the rotor is decorated with Côtes de Genève striping. For a family brand at this price, an in-house calibre is a statement of intent, and it's the clearest answer to anyone who asks whether Raymond Weil is a "real" watchmaker.
Freelancer Calibre RW1212 2781-ST-50051
The in-house movement, on show
A two-hand watch with nothing to distract from the movement: a blue open-worked dial, the balance swinging at six, and a rotor decorated with Côtes de Genève striping.
Who it suits: The buyer who wants proof of Raymond Weil's watchmaking on their wrist.
RRP $4,895 AUD

We won't pretend to know. Nobody can promise what any watch will be worth in ten years, and we don't make resale predictions for any brand we sell. Our honest advice: buy a Raymond Weil because you like it and will wear it, not as an investment. If you do want to protect its value, keep the box and papers, look after it, and have it serviced properly when it's due.
Which Raymond Weil to Start With
If you're new to the brand, these are the four we'd point you to first. Two are A.R.T. automatics for everyday wear, and two are Toccatas with a more classic look.
A.R.T. Automatic Graphite 1000-STP-20001
The everyday automatic, in two-tone
A 38mm automatic in steel with yellow gold PVD, with a sunray-brushed graphite dial, a date at three and a 41-hour power reserve. The sapphire crystal is anti-reflective, and it's water resistant to 100 metres.
Who it suits: Anyone who wants one Swiss automatic for every day, with a little warmth from the gold.
RRP $3,500 AUD
View the A.R.T. Graphite →Toccata Heritage 2280-P5-45001
The heritage pick
A slim 33 x 38mm oval case in steel with rose gold PVD, a sunrayed red grape dial and dauphine hands. Inside is the hand-wound RW4100 with a 45-hour power reserve, on show through a sapphire caseback. Raymond Weil says the design recalls 1970s watchmaking.
Who it suits: Anyone drawn to classic, '70s-inspired design who enjoys winding a watch by hand.
RRP $3,200 AUD
View the Toccata Heritage →A.R.T. Automatic Sage Grey 1000-ST-52001
The integrated bracelet
The A.R.T. is Raymond Weil's first watch with an integrated bracelet, and it looks thoroughly current. This 38mm automatic has a sage grey dial, H-shaped links with polished bevels, and a fluted crown that echoes the bezel.
Who it suits: Anyone who likes the integrated-bracelet look but wants something less obvious than the usual suspects.
RRP $3,300 AUD

The dress watch
At 24mm, the Toccata Classic is small and refined: a steel case, a mother-of-pearl dial with twelve laboratory-grown diamond indexes and a clean, no-date layout. Quartz means it's ready whenever you are.
Who it suits: A first fine watch, or a gift that will be worn for years.
RRP $1,995 AUD
